Silver Lake Hills Kitchen
This mid-century home is located in the enchanting and stylish Silver Lake of East Los Angeles. Herbert Bass Steidle of HBS Designs was hired to do a complete renovation of the home’s galley kitchen and weathered outdoor living area. He developed a vision and plan to combine the indoor/outdoor spaces so that they flowed perfectly and maximized the available living and entertainment space of the home.
In order to accomplish this, we removed the load-bearing wall and engineered and installed a structural 22 foot long I-beam, as well as a remote controlled, flush-mounted ceiling hood system over the Viking stove and peninsula creating an unobstructed and open view. The existing slab stone kitchen floor and steps were also replaced with new hardwood flooring that blended perfectly with the rest of the house.
Calcutta marble was fabricated and book matched for the waterfall and countertop, creating one seamless piece of stone. The backsplash was detailed with white 3×6 subway tiles. We designed and custom-built kitchen cabinets with a black satin lacquered finish, and incorporated LED under-cabinet lighting.
As a finishing touch, we added floating shelves in the kitchen and living room made from 100 year-old reclaimed beech wood. Energy-efficient LED recessed lights with square-trims were placed throughout the kitchen, living and dining areas.
